Dunedin Repertory Children’s Theatre: The Red Dragon

April 4th — 12th, 2026

Playhouse Theatre

Will three travellers solve the mystery of the Red Dragon and get back the treasure he has stolen? Find out at the Playhouse these school holidays!

Join in the adventure as Lee, a young dumpling seller, Jen, a boastful but very funny monkey, and Nightingale journey to the Mountains of the Moon. What is the secret of the Red Dragon? All Lee, Jen and Nightingale know, is that he is taking half the money earned by the poor villagers, that he has stolen a magic ring from the monkeys and the Nightingale’s song. They decide to go and confront the dragon. But things are not always what they seem.

Dunedin Repertory Children’s theatre brings you an adventure full of magic and drama. Set in an exciting fairytale landscape, with sumptuous costumes and exciting lighting effects, Lee, Jen and Nightingale encounter many colourful characters, and meet many dangers, on their quest.

Choreographer Ella Verberne has enjoyed the challenge of creating dances depicting a fiery volcano, a river, and swirling winds which threaten to carry the travelers away. Musical director Serenity Neilson has created two new original songs especially for the show.

Amongst the excitement there is much to laugh at. Jen the irrepressible, boastful and very loveable monkey is always up to mischief and the Property Master is kept busy supplying everything the cast needs – and sometimes only just in time.

Directed by Christine Colbert, The Red Dragon runs from Saturday April 4th until Sunday April 12th. Sessions for the opening weekend and final Sunday are at 2pm only. All other days are 11am and 2pm. All seats are $12. Approximate running time is 90 minutes with intermission.
