The Odyssey: The Myth Behind the Movie

The Classics Programme at the University of Otago | Ōtakou Whakaihu Waka invites you to come and explore Homer’s Odyssey.
In light of Christopher Nolan’s popular film, we will explore the myth behind the movie, examining the archaeology of the Bronze Age Aegean and its enigmatic “collapse.”
Along the way, we will consider mythic monsters, xenia and “Zeus’ law,” the formation of Greek culture and identity, changing ideas of heroism in the ancient and modern worlds, and the enduring art of Homeric storytelling in the 21st century.
Nibbles will be provided after the discussion concludes.
