Book Launch: Poles Down South - A Story of the Early Polish Settlers in Otago and Southland

Saturday, 18th November 2023 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Toitū Otago Settlers Museum

You are warmly invited to the Poles Down South book launch event 📖
"Poles Down South: A Story of the Early Polish Settlers in Otago and Southland", by Paul Klemick, QSM, POHOS historian with Prof. Peter Matheson of OU.
📅Saturday 18 November
⏰2pm
Free Event - All Welcome
Coffee, tea, and cake will follow.
Both authors, plus Toitū curator, Sean Brosnahan, will give a presentation about Polish visitors and settlers to Aotearoa, followed by a Q&A session.
It will surprise many that the first Polish born botanists visited and documented the endemic flora and fauna 250 year ago.
The "Poles Down South" book will be available for sale at the launch event, which is free and open to the general public: all and anyone interested in the hardships of emigrating and leaving all that's familiar for the big unknown; the very complex Polish history and the country's ever-changing borders, railway construction during Vogel years, or life on the Taieri Plain in the nineteenth century. This book will touch someone personally, if they've been an immigrant themselves or had ancestors who immigrated to New Zealand.
