Recently, RNZ published lists of the most borrowed library books of 2025. In the children’s and YA sections, the borrows were dominated by just a few authors, none of them from New Zealand. It got me thinking about how easy it is at Christmas just to buy the next book in a series that a child is enjoying (because there are a LOT) and I wondered if it might be helpful to make some other suggestions to busy parents and grandparents of some NZ titles that might hit the same notes if given the chance. There are plenty more — if this gets traction I may do a part 2, and very happy to hear suggestions for substitutions for Diary of a Wimpy Kid, David Walliams and the Treehouse books by Andy Griffiths.
