Water Globe - David Howard in Ljubljana UNESCO City of Literature

By City of Literature | Posted:

David Howard, who is on his way to Ulyanovsk to take up a City of Literature residency there, is currently in Ljubljana UNESCO City of Literature to discuss his libretto for the chamber opera Water Globe with the composer Brina Jez.

Martina and Martin are on the troubled cusp of adolescence. They are best friends. She is a champion swimmer; he is scared of water and suffers from nightmares in which the floodwaters that regularly threaten Ljubljana are represented by a giant watersnake and other figures from Slovenian folklore. Martina's control of water anticipates her control of a sexuality that is unseen but developing; Martin senses this, so his fear of water (oceanic melding) is also a fear of the feminine. But Martina teaches him how to tame the monsters of his subconscious.
