Guest Speaker: David Goodwin

Creative Cities Southern Hui warmly welcomes DAVID GOODWIN as guest speaker. David will be speaking at Centre for the Book: Books and Users on Wednesday 29th November. 

David is a poet and lecturer, born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

During his time in Zimbabwe he worked as a land surveyor and lectured at the University of Zimbabwe for many years.

In 2003 David settled in Dunedin with his lovely wife, Dianne, and four lovely daughters. After a year of building and maintenance work, David completed a PhD, somewhere between Anthropology and Surveying, and began lecturing at the School of Surveying.

David has poetry published in the UK (books and journals) and in Southern Africa.

He considers his research interests to be socially-based land tenure in transition; archaeoastronomy and literary cartography.

David’s presentation is about how we use books as a ‘window’.

‘Books can be used to show others something about our inner selves. Books that others have chosen can also tell us something about their inner qualities.’

The University of Otago's Centre for the Book: Books and Users symposium, on Wednesday 29th November, explores the many ways we interact with the ubiquitous object we call the book, and probes the meaning of 'user'.
