Theatre piece for Flash Fiction Day

University of Otago student Temple Flaws (19) performs a theatre piece directed by Amanda Faye Martin during the final awards event for National Flash Fiction Day in Dunedin last night.

The piece was inspired by the written work of Dunedin’s Dr Susan Wardell.

About 60 people piled into the Alexander Pianos room in King Edward Court to celebrate flash fiction — short stories of about 300 words — on the shortest day of the year.

Attendees enjoyed readings from both established and emerging writers, as well as a composition played on the Alexander Piano, the longest grand piano in the world.

National Flash Fiction Day Committee chairwoman Michelle Elvy said about 400 submissions were received this year.

"Dunedin is a pretty exciting event this year because Diane Brown is one of the two judges and she’s a local poet," she said.
