Poetry Box June challenge: Favourite Places

By Paula Green | Posted: Thursday Jun 04, 2026

You are invited to write a poem about a place you love. Submissions close Tuesday 23 June.

Sometimes I am in the mood to go to a favourite place but it is too far or the weather is too wild or am not well so I travel to a place in a poem. Wonderful! It might be a beach or a mountain or the fountains in Rome or the Natural History Museum in New York. Or it might be my Pop’s glasshouse full of tomatoes. Or the track though our bush. Or sitting at our kitchen table watching the beauty clouds make sky art.

For June I am inviting you to write a poem about a place you love. It might be faraway or where you live. It might be a room or a museum or a beach or a park or a river or a mountain or a shop or a street or a hammock. It might be a path or a road or track. It might be a chair or a hammock or a sandpit. The choice is yours!

1. Brain storm words on a piece of paper.

2. Take a photo with words of the place. What can you see and hear and remember?

3. Listen to how your poem flows.

4. Hide and share things that surprise and delight you about this place.

5. Your poem might use a handful of words.

6. Your poem might use a truckload or a caravan of words.

7. Play with how you set your poem out if you want to.

8. You might write word patterns, repeat words.

9. Your poem might be a memory, a little story, a poem postcard.

10. Above all, I invite you to have fun and PLAY with words.

DEADLINE: Tuesday June 23nd
SEND to paulajoygreen@gmail.com

I will read all the poems and pick some to post at the end of the month and I will have some of my poetry books to give away. I always think of this as a poem challenge, a chance to explore and discover and go word flying!
