Tagaloa Scholarships

General information
There are two Tagaloa scholarships on offer, which will support Pacific tertiary students to achieve in tertiary institutions.
The scholarships are part of the Ministry’s wider Talanoa Ako response to the Pacific PowerUP evaluations 2016–2019. Pacific communities highlighted the need for ‘Pacific as and by Pacific’to be supported by growing Pacific capacity and capability within communities and the education sector.
How to apply
Applications for the Tagaloa Scholarships open on Monday 23 November 2020 and close at 11.59pm Wednesday 23 December 2020.
There are two Tagaloa post-graduate scholarships available annually for a total value of $24,000:
- One Masters scholarship of $10,000 for one year of full-time study
- One Doctoral scholarship of $14,000 for one year of full-time study
The Tagaloa scholarship is for one year. The successful applicants will be notified and awarded their scholarships in January 2021 for the 2021 academic year.
Successful applicants will be required to provide an end of 2021 progress film and progress report.
Preference will be given to applicants who are able to demonstrate that their studies aim to improve the social, economic, and wellbeing of Pacific through a Pacific-holistic worldview.
Instructions
The application consists of two parts:
1. Application form
You must attach all of the following in the online application form. A page for uploading your documents will automatically appear after you select which scholarship you are applying for in the online form. We accept JPEG, PDF and Docx formats.
Masters Scholarship
- A copy of confirmation that you are enrolled in a Masters programme*.
- A brief statement of up to 300 words, outlining the topic, the reasons for your interest and research in the subject area, and how you think your research will contribute positively to strengthening the body of available Pacific education research and evidence
Doctorate Scholarship
- Provide confirmation that you have completed your provisional year in a PhD programme*.
- Provide confirmation that your tertiary institution's Doctoral Committee has approved your full enrolment status in the PhD programme*.
- A 500-word statement outlining your thesis/doctorate topic and why you believe research is needed in this area.
- A written reference from your supervisor.
*All of these documents must be photocopied and certified.
You can ask any one of the following people to certify your documents:
- School principal
- Registrar of a tertiary provider
- District Court Registrar or Deputy Registrar
- Barrister or Solicitor
- Justice of the Peace
2. Film
The film can be recorded on a cell phone (10 minutes max) where you will:
- Introduce yourself
- Describe how you are involved in your Pacific community and how tertiary study will enhance this involvement.
- Articulate what you think are the two key values of your Pacific ethnicity and why this is important to you.
