Guest Speaker: Shayne Carter

Creative Cities Southern Hui warmly welcomes SHAYNE CARTER as guest speaker and delegate. Shayne will be speaking at Creative Connections on Thursday 30th November.

‘I am looking forward to the Creative Cities Southern Hui as an opportunity to share and hear ideas with like-minded souls, and to figure out whether they’ve written their own programme notes too.’

Shayne Carter is one of Dunedin’s most celebrated musical figures who loves writing about himself in the third person. When he does, he always mentions all the awards he’s won and how he’s toured internationally since the 80s and released eight albums and numerous singles and EPs through labels like Sub Pop, Rough Trade, Arista and Flying Nun. He is also a member of the New Zealand Rock Hall Of Fame and once got given another lifetime achievement award by the Prime Minister.

Shayne usually does a roll call of the bands he’s been in too, like Dimmer, Straitjacket Fits, Doublehappys and Bored Games and always takes great care to present himself as the most talented and fairest member of these bands while spending an inordinate amount of time talking up his songwriting, singing and guitar-playing abilities.

Last year he released an album of songs written on piano, an instrument he’s never played before. He recently toured Asia playing guitar with Atamira Dance Company and was musical director for the APRA Silver Scrolls, held in Dunedin for the first time, in late September 2017.

Shayne has also worked as a journalist and writer for such outlets as the Listener, Sunday Star Times and The Spinoff and is currently based in Aramoana where he is writing a memoir.

Creative Connections aims to explore creativity as the touchstone of healthy, sustainable communities and celebrate the power of collaboration to inspire.
