‘Capturing Light – Roy Miller – New Zealand Stained Glass artist’, has just won a bronze medal in the Australasian non-fiction section of the American Independent Publisher Book Awards.

The awards, which are in their 21st year, are open to all members of the independent publishing industry who publish less than 50 titles a year – including universities, small presses and self-publishers. Nicknamed the ‘Ippy Awards’ (its easier to say), this is now among the largest and most recognised book awards contests in the world. They identify ‘thought-provoking books, the kind that can touch lives, advance careers, and stretch our imaginations and recognise excellence in independent publishing.’

They are designed to ‘reward those who exhibit the courage, innovation, and creativity to bring about change in the world of publishing’. Judging is based on – content, originality, design, and production quality with an emphasis on innovation and social relevance.

In 2017 over 5000 entries from 2700 authors and publishers were received from 29 English-speaking nations.

After 23 years bookselling around the South Island through his shop, Tapui Children’s Books, and then 10 years writing and publishing, this is Brian Miller’s first award ever.

Brian has also written and published a book about his father’s artwork, Moments in Time – Ralph Miller, Artist. Since creating their own publishing company, Lifelogs Ltd., in 2007, Brian and his wife Diane have produced 13 books, ranging from local history to children’s picture books to a cycle trail pocket guide. Brian does not intend to ‘rest on his laurels’ so more of these guides are planned in the future.
