Big news for Māori rock art!

Big news for Māori rock art!

Massive congratulations to our Curator Māori, Dr Gerard O’Regan, who has been awarded a prestigious Mana Tūānuku Research Leader Fellowship by Royal Society Te Apārangi.

Over the next four years, Gerard will lead groundbreaking research into Aotearoa’s precious and fragile Māori rock art, connecting archaeological work with mātauranga Māori, iwi perspectives, and international partners across Polynesia.

His research will directly shape a major Māori rock art exhibition opening at Tūhura in 2027, developed with Canterbury Museum and the Ngāi Tahu Māori Rock Art Trust.

We’re incredibly proud of Gerard and thrilled to see this important kaupapa recognised and supported.
