Dunedin City Council is celebrating National Volunteer Week 2026

Meet Sharon Connor, who volunteers with the Dunedin Public Libraries Home Services team.

Returning to Dunedin from Wellington in 2022, Sharon adopted a family tradition of volunteering with Dunedin Public Libraries. Like her father a generation prior, she volunteers with the Home Services team, delivering books, videos, audio books, and magazines to residents who cannot get out to visit their local library or Book Bus.

"I can't imagine not having access to books," says the avid reader as to why the free library service is among volunteer activities she makes time for each month.

Encouraging others to give volunteering a go, Sharon adds: "It feels good to do things for other people. You may be out of your comfort zone briefly, but it will become your happy place."

A big shout out to Sharon and to all the volunteers across Ōtepoti Dunedin and throughout Aotearoa — they help make our communities strong!
