Moa Imaginarium Competition

Upload a picture, poem, or short-story inspired by the moa footprints on display at Otago Museum and be in to win!
Earlier this year, something amazing was found in the Kyeburn River. A row of strange markings under the water turned out to be moa footprints!
The prints were brought to Otago Museum to save them from being worn away. You can see them undergoing conservation work in our People of the Word gallery right now.
They are big, old, and very mysterious!
Once the prints have finished drying out, they will be investigated by all sorts of people to find out what made them, when they were made, and how they have been preserved for so long.
We are so excited and we can’t wait for the results, so we want to know what you think.

The Moa Imaginarium Competition is open to all children aged 5–12 who live in the Otago region.
Competition entries will be displayed at the Museum and on our website, and the best entries will win some moa-sized Museum prize packs.
Prizes
First place winners in the junior category (ages 5–8) and the senior category (ages 9–12) will receive:
- An annual pass for the Tūhura Otago Community Trust Science Centre for one adult and one child
- A family pass to Zealandia: Life on the Hidden Continent in the Perpetual Guardian Planetarium
- Six tickets to Tūhura Otago Community Trust Science Centre
- Guided Museum tour for the prize winner’s family
Highly Commended winners in the junior category (ages 5–8) and the senior category (ages 9–12) will receive:
- A family pass to Zealandia: Life on the Hidden Continent in the Perpetual Guardian Planetarium
- A family ticket (two adults and two children, or one adult and three children) to Tūhura Otago Community Trust Science Centre
- Guided Museum tour for the prize winner’s family
Terms and Conditions
These conditions of entry apply to all submissions to the Moa Imaginarium Competition 2019.
Competition details
1. The competition opens at 9am on Friday, 20 December 2019 and closes at 12pm on Sunday, 2 February 2020. No entries will be accepted outside of these dates.
2. All entries must be submitted online, via the form on the Otago Museum (the organiser’s) website (hardcopy originals will not be accepted. If you have no internet access but would still like to enter, please contact the competition coordinator on 03 479 3269).
3. All entries will be publicly available on the organiser’s website.
4. Each person can submit one entry to the competition. If more than one entry is submitted, only the first will be counted.
5. Winning and highly commended entries will be announced on 10 February 2020. Winning and highly commended entrants will also be contacted by email and/or phone.
6. Otago Museum reserves the right to disqualify entries that are deemed inappropriate for, or offensive to, the Museum audience, at its sole discretion.
7. Otago Museum staff and their families are not eligible to enter the competition.
8. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
Technical information
9. If the Otago Museum is unable to open or upload entries submitted because of technical errors caused by file quality or if the file is damaged, we reserve the right not to include the entries in the competition. No correspondence will be entered into with the entrant.
Prize categories
10. Entry is open to all school-aged students in years 1 – 8 who reside in the Otago region. There are two age groups: Ages 5–8 and 9–12.
11. One winning entry and two highly commended entries will be chosen in each age group.
12. Prizes are non-transferable and are not redeemable for cash.
Copyright, Intellectual Property, and Privacy
13. The entrant must be the original creator of the entry as described in the Copyright Act 1994. Any attempt at plagiarism will result in immediate disqualification.
14. Entrants agree to grant Otago Museum a perpetual, non-exclusive licence to use submitted entries for marketing, commercial, and editorial use. Entrants will be credited in all possible circumstances.
15. Otago Museum acknowledges the moral rights provisions of the Copyright Act 1994, including the right to be identified as the author of the work and the right to object to derogatory treatment of the work. To preserve the artistic integrity of the entry, no work will be intentionally edited, altered, demeaned, or misrepresented in any way.
16. The entrant fully indemnifies Otago Museum against any claims arising from the display or use of unaltered work as described herein, and from the infringement of intellectual property rights of any third party.
Consent
17. Entrants agree to be contacted by Otago Museum regarding this competition.
18. The entrant’s acknowledgement of, and consent to, these Conditions of Entry is granted through submission of their entry or entries to the competition.
