Action time here for Fringe Festival

Dunedin artists are in the final phases of assembling their shows as the Dunedin Fringe Festival starts today.

Many shows have faced last-minute challenges because of the spread of Covid-19, including the multimedia experience show Spectacle Presents: Disturbance.

Project director Jess Covell said the show had been planned to be an interactive sensory in-person experience, but in the face of cancellation it had to be moved online.

That meant a lot of last-minute changes, including filming the performances to be broadcast on the Fringe website.

The show featured a range of art styles, from live drawing and sculpture to music and sound design.

Those passing by the recording space in Princes St yesterday were able to catch a glimpse of the action as Dunedin bands Hystera and The Spectacle Band filmed their segments behind shop windows.

More filming would be done this evening and the finished product would be released tomorrow, she said.

The festival starts today and will run until March 27.

There will be many events happening around the city, including music, comedy experimental art and more.

Free and online events are also available.
