Eggleton to judge Kathleen Grattan Poetry Award

New Zealand Poet Laureate David Eggleton will judge the Kathleen Grattan prize for 2021.

Otago University Press publisher Rachel Scott is thrilled to have enlisted Eggleton to judge the award.

‘As Poet Laureate he has a very full agenda, but he was eager to be involved with this high-profile competition. David’s selections will help highlight some wonderful new poetic talent.’

David Eggleton received the Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement in poetry in 2016, the year The Conch Trumpet won the Poetry Award at the 2016 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards. The following year he was the recipient of the Fulbright-Creative New Zealand Pacific Writers’ Residency. For eight years (2009–17) David was editor of Landfall.

The Kathleen Grattan Poetry Award is for an original book-length collection of poems by a New Zealand or South Pacific permanent resident or citizen. Individual poems in the collection may have been previously published, but the collection as a whole should be unpublished. 

Entries are accepted until 31 July, 2021. The result will be announced in the November issue of Landfall, and the winner will receive $10,000 and a year’s subscription to Landfall.
