Dunedin Dream Brokerage is proud to present the recipients of our latest initiative, Off The Ground. Tūwhana, Caffenol Cafe 1. RDC Espresso, Basking and The Commons have received funds for collaborative art projects that had been suppressed by the COVID-19 pandemic, to activate the places we live and work in. Please join us in celebrating these artists and their ideas, and take part in these diverse and engaging art activations within our communities.

Tūwhana, a collaboration between Waiariki Parata-Taiapa (Kāi Tahu), Heramaahina Eketone (Ngāti Maniapoto me Waikato) and Alex Whitaker will be open to the public on Monday 1 March 2021 for two weeks at 23 Princes Street. Based around a narrative from Waiariki’s research on whānau travelling the landscape, Tūwhana will bring the stories about our local mauka, awa, manu, and tākata to life in a 3D narrative. The project will evolve over a two week period as Heramaahina and Alex share their mahi toi (art making) and invite whānau and the public to hear the kōrero and learn about the characters depicted in the work. Tūwhana will finish on Saturday 13 March with a silent auction.

Further along at 346 George Street at RDC Cafe, Chris Schmelz will be welcoming all RDC regulars and curious people to take part in his project Caffenol Cafe 1. RDC Espresso.

Caffenol Cafe is an analogue photography project using coffee to develop film within a café environment. From Monday 12 to Friday 16 April, Chris will invite people to have their portrait taken in the cafe where they will see the process revealed as he develops the negatives onsite using ‘Caffenol’, a special formula that includes RDC’s unique coffee blend. Portraits will then be digitally printed and available to take away or remain in the café for the finale exhibition.

Starting in April, Kate Fitzharris will be investigating the idea of The Commons, which refers to places and resources not owned privately but held in common and managed for the collective good. It also alludes to seeking out what we hold in common with each other and the things around us, so we may have a more empathetic world view. Expanding on her ceramic practice, Kate will make site-specific sculptural responses to notions of domesticity, wildness and the way seemingly inanimate objects partake in our lives. She will use clays and earths from cuttings and diggings, sticks, charcoals, and other onsite materials.

On Saturday 17 and Saturday 24 April you are invited to mokomoko (lizard) drawing workshops at Orokonui Ecosanctuary Te Korowai o Mihiwaka, as part of Madison Kelly’s project, Basking.
Madison, an artist and Orokonui guide, will lead workshops suitable for participants with any level of drawing experience. An Ōtepoti-based Basking hub exhibition, workshop and hui space will also be open for the project’s duration. Basking welcomes communities to learn about local mokomoko, make their own habitat tiles, and develop long-term, lizard-friendly habitats in their suburban gardens. The mokomoko habitat tiles made throughout Basking will create ‘productive grounds’ that serve both functional and poetic roles in suburban conservation culture.
