Archibald Baxter Memorial Peace Garden Crowdfunding Campaign - Update

By Tony Eyre - Trustee, The Archibald Baxter Memorial Trust | Posted:

Although Archibald Baxter is New Zealand’s best-known conscientious objector, his story may not be familiar to some of you. His 1939 autobiography We Will Not Cease is his story of his brutal treatment as a conscientious objector in World war One and is well worth seeking out at your local library.

Equally compelling is the 2014 New Zealand movie Field Punishment No. 1 which dramatically tells the story of Baxter, Mark Briggs and other ‘conchies’ who defied conscription and, on moral grounds, chose not to fight. The movie is occasionally featured on TVNZ On Demand. Here’s a link to the movie trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0aEU7KFobA
