Wow! Productions proudly launches their 2019- 2020 season with the NZ Premiere of The Flick by Annie Baker. Baker is one of the freshest and most talented playwrights to emerge Off-Broadway in the last decade. Described as "a mesmerising comic micro-epic about movies and moving on" The Flick is set in a run-down movie theatre in central Massachusetts. It focuses on three underpaid employees who mop the floors and attend to one of the last 35 millimetre film projectors in the state. Their tiny battles and not-so-tiny heartbreaks play out in the empty aisles, becoming more gripping than the lacklustre, second-run movies on screen.

The Flick marks Lara Macgregor’s directing return to Dunedin, four years after stepping down as Artistic Director at Fortune Theatre. Lara is thrilled to be making her directorial debut for Wow! Productions with one of her favourite female playwrights in recent times. “Annie’s work is delicate, poetical and funny. She’s constantly interested in reassessing what it is to watch a play, observing the poetry of how people speak, and embraces a slow theatrical metabolism believing inherently that theatre is a place for contemplation.”

The triumvirate that make up the cast - Nick Dunbar, Timothy Itayi and Sam Shannon - were hand picked over a series of months to play the complexly funny characters of Sam, Avery and Rose. They are embracing all of the play’s demands including dying hair green, shaving heads, watching a slew of movies and eating a high volume of popcorn.

Says Wow! Productions board member Marty Roberts:

“It is a coup for Wow! Productions to have been able to secure the NZ Premiere rights for The Flick. New York Magazine so aptly describes the play as: Funny, heart-breaking, sly and unblinking…the best argument anyone has yet made for the continued necessity, and profound uniqueness, of theatre. A true reflection of Wow! Productions’ kaupapa.”

With keen insight and a finely tuned comic eye, The Flick is an hilarious and heart-rending cry for authenticity in a fast-changing world.
