In Wisława Szymborska's poem ‘Possibilities’, translated from Polish by Stanisław Barańczak and Claire Cavanagh, the winner of the 1996 Nobel Prize in Literature writes about what she
prefers - as an individual and in the world. Our own Liz Breslin wrote a poem in response while on a Cities of Literature residency in Kraków. Dunedin UNESCO City of Literature invited
readers and writers to listen to these poems and write their own from home, to add to Dunedin UNESCO City of Literature’s permanent record of our preferences, our possibilities, our world.

Inspired by Wislawa Szymborska’s poem ‘Possibilities’ Dunedin UNESCO City of Literature in partnership
with Liz Breslin created the opportunity for writers to share their possibilities during the time of lockdown.
Here is Liz’s recording of the poem she wrote while on a Cities of Literature residency in Kraków that was the
catalyst for the ‘Possibilities Project’. https://hail.to/dunedin-unesco-city-of-literature/article/wDkax1b

In Wisława Szymborska's poem ‘Possibilities’ the winner of the 1996 Nobel Prize in Literature writes
about what she prefers - as an individual and in the world. Her poem captured the imagination of writers
everywhere who contributed to the ‘Possibilities Project’. Dunedin UNESCO City of Literature would like to
thank everyone who participated and as a thank you for this support,
Cecylia Klobukowska will read Wislawa’s poem in the original Polish.
