Poetry Night

18 November 2020 8:00pm

A reminder that our final poetry night of the year is this Wednesday 18th November. There will be featured readings from local writers Shareen Asha Murugayah and Susan Wardell. Our MC for the evening will be Claire Lacey. There will also be opportunities to read at our open mic. Please see below for guidance for those planning to sign up to read on the night.

We love our open mic! It's grown to the point where we often have 15+ readers, so to keep our poetry nights friendly, welcoming, and running smoothly we are going to start posting monthly reminders about the rules. Whether it is your first time reading at an open mic, or your fiftieth, we welcome you to come share your poetry!

1. Please keep to one poem, with a maximum length of two minutes.

2. Think about your content and who might be in the room. Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, and other hate speech are not allowed. While poetry can and should deal with difficult and confrontational subject matter, if your poem could make someone feel unsafe or unwelcome, this is not the place to share it. A good rule of thumb is don't punch down. If in doubt, ask a friend for feedback.

3. Come a little bit early to get on the sign-up sheet to read. This will help us start on time and get in the maximum poetry!

Rules for the audience:

Clap, cheer, show your appreciation. This is your space, too.

For all: please feel free to talk to the MC or a member of the Octagon Poetry Collective if you have any questions or concerns
