Making Fine Poems

This 8 topic daytime course delivered fortnightly in morning sessions is designed for anyone interested in exploring the art and craft of writing poetry. The course will focus on the building blocks for making fine modern poems, including: sound, language, metaphor, forms, line length. Emphasis will also be placed on discovering what you want to say and how to say it. Students will be given set exercises and peer and tutor feedback in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. Comprehensive notes and examples accompany this course and tutor feedback is given on writing exercises. Class is limited to 6 students. If for any reason you cannot attend a class, you will be sent the workbook and exercises.

This fortnightly course starts Thursday 10am-12pm August 8 25 2019 at 45 Sutherland St, Dunedin.

Class Dates: August 8 & 22, September 5 & 19, October 3 & 17 & 31, November 14.

Fees $450 payable by start of the course. 

Previous Creative Writing Dunedin students who have completed an eight week course will be given a $100 discount.

What’s the Story? This day will focus on various elements of fiction writing and introduce some new ideas and fresh perspectives. It is designed for all levels of students and is ideal to get you started or break your writer’s block.

Tea and coffee provided, bring your own lunch. Fee: $50, $40 to ex-CWD students, $30 to current students.


Spring into Poetry: This day will be a celebration of poetry with the emphasis on creating new poems. Designed for beginning poets as well as experienced poets who are looking for a fresh approach it’s an opportunity to read your poems aloud and receive supportive feedback from the class. Please bring 1 or 2 poems to work on. 

Saturday 21 September 2019: 10.30 am to 3.30pm. Venue to be advised.

Tea and coffee provided, bring your own lunch. Fee: $50, $40 to ex-CWD students, $30 to current students. 


Course tutor is experienced teacher and mentor, award winning poet, novelist and memoirist, Diane Brown.
