Friday, 22nd September 2023 5:30 PM

Otago Pioneer Women's Hall, 362 Moray Place

You are warmly invited to the launch of issue 14 of Counterfutures: Left Thought & Practice Aotearoa.

Counterfutures is a multidisciplinary journal of Left research, thought, and strategy. It brings together work from across Aotearoa New Zealand’s Left, aiming to intervene in, and inaugurate, debates about how to understand and influence our society, politics, culture, and environment. The journal is edited by Neil Vallelly and it is housed in the Sociology, Gender Studies and Criminology Programme at the University of Otago.

Issue 14 opens with an editorial on the current university crisis in Aotearoa NZ, alongside a book forum on Catherine Comyn's The Financial Colonisation of Aotearoa. The issue also includes an interview with political theorist Camila Vergara on recent struggles over the Chilean constitution, and articles on adoptee activism, socialist responses to fascism in interwar Europe, and the political theology of Covid governance, alongside book reviews.

Celebrate the journal’s new home in Ōtepoti Dunedin. There will be snacks, drinks, and a few short speeches. You will be able to purchase copies of the Issue 14, alongside Catherine Comyn’s new book The Financial Colonisation of Aotearoa (2023).
