DESCRIPTION:Steve Broni M.Sc., Chairman of the New Zealand Sea lion Trust, talks about the world’s rarest sea lion, and NZ’s only endemic pinniped seal species.
Once found all around New Zealand, the NZ (or Hooker’s) Sea lion was driven off mainland shores by Maori and later European hunters. Breeding only began again on the mainland in 1994 with one female pupping at Taieri Mouth. That single female, known locally as ‘Mum’, and immortalised in a statue recently erected at St Clair, went on to have 11 pups and bring this iconic species back to us. With their numbers decreasing in their few remaining sub-antarctic breeding grounds and the species recently classified as `nationally critical’ this small mainland population is becoming increasingly important.
