Ōtepoti – He Puna Auaha, Dunedin UNESCO City of Literature is excited to welcome you to the Creative Cities Southern Hui Tuesday 28 November – Saturday 2 December.

As the countdown to the Hui begins we will send you programme updates and teasers to whet your creative appetite!

‘Our deep inner strengths are derived from cultural and social core, which to me is like a yoke so pure and free and as old as the core of an ancient rock that stands against the modernizing currents of the world. These are sources of our learning, creativity, and articulations.’
Steven Edmund Winduo

The Creative Connections event features a wealth of exciting global and local keynote speakers, including Steven Edmund Winduo, writer, scholar and Director of the Academic Audit Unit at the University of Papua New Guinea.

Steven’s scholarly work, Transitions and Transformations: Literature, Politics and Culture in PNG (2013), encapsulates emerging issues on literature, culture, and politics in Papua New Guinea.

‘The essays capture my reflections on the literature and culture of Papua New Guinea. Literature is a window into a society. Through novels, poetry, plays, and short stories writers present an imagined community to readers.’
- Steven Edmund Winduo

Steven’s writing also inspired the Creative Cities Transitions and Transformations workshop facilitated by Dr Noel Waite of RMIT University, Melbourne. The workshop is a space for participation, collaboration and forward-thinking. Taking place over a full day, delegates are invited to source ways of cross-pollination and to develop sustainable creative partnerships.

‘I expect to be challenged and inspired by the breadth and depth of experiences of our local and international guests, and am excited by the opportunity to facilitate a workshop in the remarkable Athenaeum, where we can explore how to activate the considerable potential in the UNESCO Creative City Network.’
Noel Waite

Creative Connections takes place on Thursday 30th November, 9am – 5pm, Auditorium, Dunedin Public Art Gallery.
Creative City Transitions and Transformations takes place on Friday 1st December, 10:30am – 5pm, Athenaeum Building, The Octagon.

The Creative Cities Southern Hui is a multiple day collaborative event, generously sponsored by the NZ National Commission for UNESCO and in partnership with the University of Otago’s Centre for the Book, offering talks and workshops around the themes of creativity, connection and collaboration.
