Guest Speaker: Moira White

Creative Cities Southern Hui warmly welcomes MOIRA WHITE as guest speaker. Moira will be speaking at Centre for the Book: Books and Users on Wednesday 29th November.

‘I’m looking forward to the Creative Cities Southern Hui because it promises inspirational, inventive, imaginative interactions, and who doesn’t love those?’

Moira White is a reader and accumulator of books, and Curator – Humanities at the Otago Museum.

She is excited by the insights that can develop from revealing connections between allied disciplines; and passionate about exploring ways in which collecting and display can promote appreciation and understanding.

She has published on a wide range of topics relating to the Museum, its collections, the people who contributed to them, and the role of the museum in the ways the people of Dunedin and Otago have sought to understand the world around them.

Her presentation at the Centre for the Book Symposium is titled ‘A sheltered nook of the main hall’. It examines the display of books in the Women’s Court at the 1925–26 Dunedin and South Seas International Exhibition, which the organisers hoped would provide ‘inspiration to many a student whose thoughts were turned to writing as a field of activity’.

The University of Otago’s Centre for the Book: Books and Users symposium, on Wednesday 29th November, explores the many ways we interact with the ubiquitous object we call the book, and probes the meaning of ‘user’.
